Overview
The Communications Academy is designed to serve as an introduction to the rapidly expanding field of communications. The academic curriculum is supplemented by a variety of communications-related electives including Television and Video production, Theater, and Music. The Academy features its own computer and radio and television production lab, both of which support video and audio editing software for the students to work on creative, hands-on projects.

  • Students in this Academy have the opportunity to:
    • Intern at the School District of Philadelphia's Office of Instructional Media where students learn the art of live television production.
    • Participate in summer educational enhancement programs such as Penn State's Multicultural Journalism program, the University of the Arts' summer, fall and spring Pre-College Program, and the Philadelphia Daily News' Journalism Program where students gain experience in writing and editing newspaper articles.
    • Compete in the Big Pitch Competition, a comprehensive learning opportunity for students aimed at increasing the number of minorities in advertising and marketing.

The Academy’s Industry Advisory Board and other partners support the program by providing practice interviews, speakers, tours and internships for students and by working with Academies staff to develop curriculum. Board members for the Communications Academy include representatives from Temple University, University of the Arts, Brown Partners, Xerox Corporation and other communications related businesses and training institutes.

Communications Courses: Introduction to Communications and T.V. Production I – 10th grade, T.V. Production II –11th grade, T.V. Production III – 12th grade. Theater, Art, and Music are humanities electives open to Communications Academy students. In addition, the school offers after-school journalism, in which students are strongly encouraged to participate. Students are eligible to become certified in Final Cut Pro, the film industry's most widely used video editing software, as well as Cinematography and Television Production through the National Occupational and Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI).
