Overview
Business Academies focus their curriculum to meet industry certifications such as Microsoft Office Suite Applications as well as the National Occupational and Competency Testing Institute certifications in Business Technology and Accounting. Some academies have articulation agreements with local colleges where the student can earn college credit through a special course offered by the college. The curriculum is supplemented by a number of programs and activities designed to prepare students for entry level jobs in business and/or college entrance.

  • The Business Academies also participate in special programs that include:
    • The Stock Market Game, a program that teaches financial and economic concepts through an on-line “game” that gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio.
    • Business supported and sponsored trips to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, financial institutions, and businesses for teachers and students.
    • Marketing Meets Science, a program in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School where Business Technology students learn basic concepts in marketing, while applying what they learned through the development of a marketing study. The Wharton students work with a group of Business Technology students to facilitate the process and help design the final "mini" science fair, where they compete in teams.

The Business community plays a vital role in the program’s success. Business partners make possible special program enhancements such as internships, curriculum development, field trips, honor roll incentives, or equipment donations. The Academy’s Industry Advisory Board and other partners support the program by providing practice interviews, speakers, tours and internships for students and by working with Academies staff. Board members for the Business Academy currently include representatives of Insurance, Technology, Financial Services, Banking, and Community Development Entrepreneurs.

Business Technology Courses: Business Technology I, II, and III and Accounting I, II, III. Additional elective courses include Business Law, Entrepreneurship, and Introduction to Business. Students in each program are eligible for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint Certification as well as National Occupational and Competency Testing Institute certifications in Business Technology and/or Accounting.
