Health and Life Sciences Academy
- Quick Facts
- Launched in 1982 in coordination with Philadelphia Academies, Inc. and currently exists in two neighborhood High Schools - Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King
- State-sponsored curriculum available to both schools through the Program of Study (POS) structure. Ideally, students are directed through a three-year cohort that is rostered in groups so that students build upon their content knowledge and cognitive abilities from 10th to 12th grade. Once the program is fully established, students will take a NOCTI exam which, if they pass, will allow them to obtain a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
- Sponsors and advisors to the program development include Lankenau Hospital (creators of project based learning health curriculum development and a career day), Salus University Eye Institute (partnership with Martin Luther King that funded 3 internships for summer 2010), District 1199C (sponsor of a two year 21st Century Skills continuum grant and pipeline initiative at Abraham Lincoln), Red Cross Club (for programmatic complements), Fox Chase Cancer Center (medical students mentoring students to develop presentations on specific medical topics), Jefferson Hospital (mentoring opportunity at Martin Luther King with medical students in the DaCosta Society)
- Students at one high school have participated in the Lankenau Science Symposium for the past three years presenting topics in health, such as the moral delineation of care between pediatric and geriatric patients and the impact of laughter/positive spirits in treatment and recovery
- Students at Martin Luther King High School and Abraham Lincoln High School attend conferences and compete in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Additional exposure includes a trip to the Shriner's Hospital, University of Penn-Mutter Museum, as well as the Philadelphia Zoo.
- Health Academy students also receive 21st Century skills workshops delivered by our School Initiatives team
